Downsizing/Satellite Libraries

I am posting this for another local librarian. Please respond to me and I
will pass the responses on to the other librarian who will summarize for the
list.
A local firm is planning a move to new space. As part of the planning
process, they are reconsidering several issues involving the library. The
librarian would like to know if anyone else has experience in this area and if
anyone has any arguments for or against the issues:
1. They are considering no main library at all. The entire collection (or
what is left of it) would be in satellites located throughout the firm by
subject area. There is no indication of where the librarian would be.
Probably just in a generic office somewhere.
2. They want to move to electronic storage of some items. Does anyone have
any comments on which general types of materials are better suited to CD-ROM
or online access. By general types I mean: treatises, case law, statutes,
etc. One attorney seems to feel that treatises are better suited to CD-ROM
and case law should remain in book form. All comments in this area are
welcome.
3. They want to generally downsize the entire collection. Experience in this
area or stories about attempts to downsize are needed.
I think you get the point. Again, please respond to me and I will pass this
along and get a summary back to the list if anyone expresses interest.
