During the past several days I noticed that there was an ongoing discussion
about the confidentiality of library records. For those of you who are
interested in this topic, I have a book to recommend. It is SURVEILLANCE IN
THE STACKS: THE FBI'S LIBRARY AWARENESS PROGRAM. The author, Herbert
Foerstel, is head of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library here at
the University of Maryland Libraries at College Park. After being given a
major award for an article on this subject, he was awarded a grant by
Playboy, which led him to further research and this book. In scanning the
work, I noted that it had sections which dealt with state laws pertaining to
confidentiality of library records, and the FBI's inconsistency in
respecting these laws.

A number of the University of Maryland system libraries have copies of this
book availabe for interlibrary loan.

Hope that this is of use.
Glenn
