There's a brief item in this week's Chronicle of Higher Education
(p. A25), that starts off: "A Cornell University professor who
has studied computer bulletin boards has concluded that they
are not very helpful to researchers".
The item goes on to briefly cite his experience with the Usenet
group sci.physics.fusion.
I'd be interested in hearing reactions from people who read the
item. Have there been other such "studies"? Have results been
similar?
It would seem that items like this, in publications like the
Chronicle, might prejudice some administrators against letting
people participate in bulletin boards or conferences, on the
grounds that they're a waste of time.
