English manors (Results)

First, I want to thank everyone who responded to my query
regarding information on English manors. I received quite a
few responses, many of the most helpful ones being from OZ
rather than from the UK itself (I find that interesting).

One respondent wanted to know more about the "cataloging
project." There really isn't a project; I have one volume
of manorial (or manoral, pace Mr. Franks) court records that
needs cataloging and I was having trouble establishing a
reasonable AACR2 entry for the manor in question (viz, the
Manor of Mote).

The responses were an education in that they dramatized the
difficulty of getting the information needed quickly and
accurately. One person noted that "there have been furious
historical arguments over what manors existed and when."
All this is a little daunting for a Yankee working in a
library for which the title is of marginal importance at
best. However I am following up on some of the suggestions
that were made. These included:

        - P.D.A. Harvey's Manorial records (British Records
        Association, 1985)

        - The Manorial Society of Great Britain (65 Belmont
        Hill, London SE13 5AX)

        - Speed's Atlas of the counties of England

        - Great Britain. Royal Commission on Historical
        Manuscripts

        - The English Baronies (author?, date?)

        - Victoria History of the Counties of England
        (HMSO)

Again, thanks to all who responded.
