Re: Teaching Research to Novice 1Ls--Once More

As close as it gets at U Washington for required research is the
one-two hour lecture in a 2L or 3L substantive class. The Reference
Librarians now regularly do research lectures in Labor Law, Employment
Law, Immigration Law, International Commercial Law and Tax. This is the
first step to truly integrating research into the curriculum (sort of like
trying to integrate professional responsibility pervasively into the
curriculum without a separate course, but a good start!). If the faculty
in these courses would then follow up with an assignment really requiring
research - so much the better.
I would love to see required research all three years! And I
would not join with a writing requirement as I think the writing gets top
billing and the research short shrift.
