Teaching Research Beyond 1st Yr

At S.M.U., we offered to teach an advanced legal research course back
in the Spring semester of 1992. (We being the Director and reference-
connected librarians.)

It is a two-credit hour course requiring reading assignments; some
written research assignments during the semester; and a final 35-page paper
with research narrative. The paper is 80% of the grade and can be used to
meet one of the Law School's writing requirements.

We limit the course in size (25). It has been in heavy demand. We have
now taught the course 3 consecutive semesters, it has filled for the Fall
and is on the schedule for the Spring of 1994 as well. Despite gripes from
2L's and 3L's that the course should be 3-credits, the course continues to
fill usually on the first day of registration. So, some students are getting
the word about needed skills.

     Back to grading papers.
