Frank--I'm in the situation of teaching legal research to
paralegals who probably know less than the first year student.
I agree with Ellen that presenting the big picture is important.
I have found that focusing on the importance of treatises and
other secondary materials (heaven forbid, even Nutshells!) to be
a good way to improve vocabulary. Role playing or situational
exercises also seem to help. And, every now and then, I break down
do some substantive law explaining before an assignment, so they
can get perspective. I try to present it in terms of the JUST
ASK outline, so that I am not giving them too much help.
