The following article will appear in the June AALL Newsletter, and
is being cross-posted to LAW-LIB and TEKNOIDS. My apologies for
any duplication. Please read carefully and share with folks in
your library who aren't on the list(s).

                       I WANT MY INTERNET!
                           Anne Myers
            Internet Coordinator, Exhibits Committee

Addicted to e-mail and the wonderful world of networks? If
so, you're in for a treat at the Boston Convention. For the first
time, AALL will have an Internet Room! Located near the Exhibit
Hall, this area will be available for you to connect to your home
base and read mail, demo something for a friend, or investigate
something you've heard about at the meeting.

What! You've never accessed the networks? [N.B.: obviously
not true for any of you on this group!] Then come by and see what
all the fuss is about. There won't be any classes on using the
Internet, but there should be a lot of informal demos and
explanations going on. Take the opportunity to look over the
shoulders of terminal users or simply ask questions. Also, there
will be a small reference collection of Internet handouts and
documentation to look at while you're there.

We're still firming up all the equipment plans. Right now we
expect to have lots of IBM PCs (loaned by West and Mead Data) and
possibly a few Macs (courtesy of Apple). The computers will be
hooked directly to a local network connected to the Internet by
NEARnet, our regional network. Applications that should be
available include NCSA Telnet and FTP. Many thanks to Tom Bruce
at Cornell's Legal Information Institute for all his technical
advice on what was needed to get up and running!

In order to use the Internet Room to connect to your host
machine, you need to have some basic information before you come
to Boston:

     * Be sure you already have an account. These are assigned
by your institution; we can't give you one in Boston.
Also be sure you know how to use it, since there are many
different operating systems and mail programs.

     * Ask someone at your Computer Center how to connect to
your host machine from a remote site. Better yet, sit
down and watch them do it, and pick up an instruction
          sheet if one is available.

     * Know whether you will connect using TN3270 or Telnet.
The folks at the Computer Center can tell you that, too.

Internet Room hours will probably be the same as for the
Exhibit Hall. However, the room won't be available on Tuesday
morning because an educational program will take place in the
space. Watch the daily convention newspaper for updated
information once you're in Boston. Before then, watch the Law-
Lib discussion group for the latest news.

If you have any questions about the Internet Room or would
like to volunteer to be a resource person, please contact Anne
Myers at amyers@acs.bu.edu or 617-353-4790.
