Here at FSU we have been using our own equipment to access their CD for
a couple years now, and have yet to experience the equipment failure
downside that was a concern for the other respondents....(famous last
words). Thi obvious advantage for us is the dollar savings, it seemed
outlandish to pay the money we were paying for the outdated equipment that
we had been given (My recollection is a monochrome XT-class machine with no
hard-disk). We returned their equipment and replaced it with a hand-me-down
Zenith XT with a 20 MEGabyte Hard-Disk, 640K of RAM, and 5.0 DOS. The CD
drive is an Hitachi 1503s drive which, while not exactly screaming
fast, seems to be very reliable. All in all we have been quite satisfied
with our arrangement.
I recently responded to a posting from someone having apparent
compatibility problems in using their own hardware to access Legaltrac. I
didn't hear back as to whether or not they resolved the problems, but in a
world with as many possibilities as there are for conflicts between the
various capabilities, inclinations and requirements that go with software
and hardware, it is certainly a less-risky course to use a vendors hardware.
This is particularly true when you must load up the machine with other
software and have it doing double or triple duty, which is often necessary
for space and/or financial reasons.
    Well, that's our two-cents-worth
