Sure --
There are two companies that I know of that have a license to use West
internal page numbers is a commercial case reporter publication -- one is
Lexis in its on-line service; the other is Equity
Publishing/aka/Butterworth. Equity is the publisher of Virgin Islands
Reports. Appeals from Virgin Island courts go to the US Ct. of Appeals
for the Third Circuit. For V.I. attorneys, the Third Circuit cases are
essential. When Equity came out with a CD-ROM of VI cases, it included
cases from West's Federal Reporter and uses West internal page numbers
and the CD-ROM states that is Equity does so under license from West.
So, that is the "deal".
I know this because I handled a large case in the V.I. and have seen the
CD-ROM.
I have never seen another example of West licensing the use of internal
page numbers. Does anyone else know of an example.
I guess it would have been more precise to say that Butterworth, if in
any camp, may have been in West's camp last year...the idea being that
others on the AALL committee could have been considered West oriented.
It is important to get back to the basic point which is West pushing its
weight around on committees and panels.
The real point is that West "screamed" when Butterworth's
parent Reed acquired Lexis, and was thereby awarded another "seat" on the
AALL Task Force. I call that terrorizing ... perhaps some can use a
softer word, but the concept is the same.
