While some may think this is a tangent, I couldn't agree more
with Riva Laughlin's morning post concerning online and book
research. As someone who has been on the front lines of
academic medical reference services for ten years, and academic
legal reference services for five years, law schools and law
firms better start paying more attention. Unlike the vast
majority of medical school/residency graduates, law school
graduates and first-year associates are often virtually
unprepared in the research skills, let alone the "business" and
practical skills, needed in the real world of their profession.
Granted, medical education is subsidized by the state. But
maybe the state (ie, public) should recognized that attorneys
are needed just like physicians are needed. Unsubsidized law
schools rely upon tuition dollars, often leading to huge classes
as well as insufficient and ineffective education. More time
and money needs to be invested in legal education, including
post-graduate education.
