Marketing Ethics Responses

My question yesterday concerning the ethical issues of giving
out lists to a vendor who is seeking some marketing help was met with
great response, virtually everyone saying not to do it.

Reasons ranged from the thought that handing out a list would
undermine AALL's profitability (which I certainly would not want to do)
to the thought of being inundated with requests from other marketers.
There were also suggestions of potential conflict of interest issues
(suppose the vendor takes you out for lunch or pays you in some way for
this service), not to mention that people would simply be annoyed that
their name was given out (especially if they have taken steps to remove
their name from lists generated by AALL).

Suggestions were made that this person could go through the AALL
Directory to do her own research, or that she could purchase a TS member
list from AALL.

There were also suggestions that this person could probably
advertise in "Technical Services Law Librarian" (the newsletter for TS/SIS
and OBS/SIS), or that she should contact AALL for ideas and help with her
marketing attempt.

That was my final resolution. I called her back and told her to
contact AALL HQ, and possibly the editor of "TS Law Librarian".

Thank you to everyone who responded to me. This was most enlightening.
