Hello-
I had to add my $.02 to this discussion. This fall, while watching Penn
State play a football game on ABC, I heard the commentators tell this
story about the name Nittany Lions. It seems that there used to be a
bobcat like animal native to the Mount Nittany area, that was called a
Nittany Lion. It was particularly fond of practically domesticated farm
animals, and was, consequently well fed. The farmers were not so
enamored with the lion, however, and hunted it into extinction, at least
in that area, sometime around the turn of the century.
Athletic teams being fond of ferocious Wild Animals as mascots, thought
this local lion would make a dandy mascot.
Peace,
Brian-
