You've received some great responses so far. Another great resource (for
several coins that are no longer minted but may be found, as well as
cuurent coinage) is the Coin
World Almanac put out by the editors of Coin World. It is published by
World Almanac. The version we have is the 6th edition (1990). I don't
know if another edition had been published. There is an excellent
history section here, and discussion of coins such as the $20, $10, $5, $3,
$2.50 and $.50. The whole book is really some great (trivia?) reading.
