The Librarian as Info-Surfer

There's a great article in the April Glamour magazine about
librarianship as a profession. The headline is THE NEW LIBRARIAN IS
AN INFO-SURFER, and it discusses how librarianship has changed.
Some of my favorite quotes:
"Perhaps more than in any other career, technology has
transformed the work of the librarian, leaving her with more time to do
what she does best: provide information. Thanks to training in databases
and other computer tools, today's librarian is an information guru
who designs systems, evaluates new technologies and coaches people
on how to find the best sources on-line."
Richard Lytle, dean of the college of information studies at
Drexel University is quoted as saying "As the status of this career has
risen, so has the interest on the part of men." Hey, maybe our pay will
go up, too!
And finally, "If you tremble at the sight of a keyboard, though,
forget library science. The program at Drexel, for example, is 50
percent information systems and software engineering and is likely to get
even more high-tech in the future."
This is the most positive piece on librarianship I can remember
seeing. I was excited.
