REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
I. POSITION INFORMATION AND DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Reference Librarian
SALARY: $30,000 minimum
STATUS: Senior Administrative & Professional (Law
Librarian); Twelve Month, Full-time Position
STARTING DATE: After April 1, 1994
The person in this position will be one of four full-time
reference librarians within the Public Services Department of
the Law Library. The primary responsibility of this position is
providing sophisticated research and reference service to the
faculty and students of the College of Law, the University and
to other patrons of the Law Library. The assignments of all the
reference librarians extend, however, well beyond the
Reference Desk. Specifically, this position encompasses the
following: providing instruction and guidance for College of Law
faculty, students and staff on the use of electronic resources,
including LEXIS, WESTLAW, the Internet, DIALOG and other
databases; serving as primary liaison between the Law Library
and LEXIS and WESTLAW; developing tools for user education
such as research guides and compiling legislative histories and
bibliographies; coordinating with the College of Law Systems
Analyst on oversight of the Computer Laboratory.
Together with his or her colleagues, the person in this position
will also participate in teaching Introduction to Legal Research
to first-year law students; lecture on legal research to
various classes within and outside the College; take part in the
evaluation and selection of information resources in all
formats (print, A-V, microform, electronic) and serve on Law
Library, College of Law and University-wide committees. Some
evening and weekend hours are required.
This position has been steadily evolving as information formats
and resources have changed; we expect this evolution to
continue. This position offers an excellent opportunity for
creativity and professional growth to an energetic, motivated
individual with excellent communication skills, who wishes to
work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and a research
oriented faculty within a major, land-grant university.
Law Librarians at The Ohio State University are Senior
Administrative and Professional employees with a generous
array of benefits including twenty-two days of annual accrued
vacation and tuition discounts. The holder of this position
reports to the Associate Director.
II. THE LAW LIBRARY
The Law Library is housed in a newly expanded and renovated
building on the main campus of The Ohio State University. It
serves the forty faculty members and 660 J.D. students of the
College of Law in addition to many students and faculty members
from other departments of the University. The Law Library's
collection consists of approximately 580,000 volumes and
equivalents and is particularly strong in the areas of
alternative dispute resolution, health care law, international
law and socio-legal studies. In 1993, the Law Library occupied a
substantial new addition which more than doubled its space and
provided the groundwork for a rapid expansion in the use of
automated information systems. The new addition has created a
very comfortable and easily used library and allows each
librarian to have a spacious office.
Although autonomous, the Law Library works closely with the
University and Health Sciences Libraries on issues of mutual
interest. Together with these libraries, the Law Library is
participating in OhioLINK, a state-wide project which will
provide a state-of-the-art library automation system (designed
by Innovative Interfaces, Inc.) linking Ohio's major institutions
of higher education (including seven law school libraries). The
staff of the Law Library has ample opportunity to participate
at the University and state levels in the development and
evolution of OhioLINK. The Law Library will begin to use the
OhioLINK online catalog and circulation systems in the summer
of 1994.
The Ohio State University is located in Columbus, the largest
city in Ohio and the state capitol. Columbus is a vigorous,
growing city which offers a wide variety of cultural,
entertainment, dining and recreational opportunities. Ohio
State offers a full array of Big Ten sports. Good and
affordable housing can be found within easy reach of the
campus.
III. QUALIFICATIONS
1. MLS and JD degrees from ALA and ABA accredited (or
