Executive Director Retiring

From: Mark Estes (mestes@csn.org)
Date: 03/17/93

AALL's Executive Director, Judy Genesen recently announced her intention
to retire at the end of the AssociationUs fiscal year, September 30, 1993.
(Her husband retires then.) I will miss her, read more in the April
newsletter.

The Executive Board is responsible for appointing the Executive Director.
I hope we can accomplish the search to permit the new executive director
to attend at least part of our annual meeting in Boston.
To meet that goal we will follow the recommendations of the 1988 search
committee:
% Use an executive search firm to screen the candidates.
% Use a single search committee interviews six to eight candidates.
This committee chooses the finalist and negotiates the contract. .

The Search Committee is:
% current president, Mark Estes
% vice-president/president elect, Kay Todd
% vice-president/president-elect-elect, (Carol Billings or Kathy Carrick)
% treasurer, Judith Meadows.
% chaired by Don Dunn who was on the 1988 committee
% two other members to achieve balanced representation by library
type and geography, including someone with experience interviewing
candidates in group settings and interviewing people for positions in
large organizations like this)

Selecting the new executive director involves an ambitious timeline,
already under way:

Timeline 1993 Executive Director Search
Prior to March 15
% Judy assembles list of possible association executive/library
director search firms
% Board members send possible search committee member names to me.
Very soon after March 15
% I appoint the committee (I have not completed the appointments,
so you may still e-mail or fax me the names of possible committee members)
Prior to April 23,24 Board Meeting:
% Committee meets (live or electronically)
% Search firm selected
% Background information prepared, decisions made about contract,
salary, evaluations, etc.
% Background information given to search firm
% Ads are run.
April Board Meeting
% Discuss questions raised about the process and not resolved.
By May 30
% Interviews by search firm
% Background check of 8-10 best
By June 30
% Committee interviews 6 candidates across 2 or 3 days
% Selects primary candidate
By July 10
% Committee makes offer and negotiates contract.
% New executive director designate attends part of Boston convention

I encourage you to think about who might be a good candidate for the
position of AALL executive director. After the search firm is selected,
the firm and contact person will be posted here (and elsewhere) so people
can indicate their own interest or submit the names of possible candidates.
