I am looking for information on how law firms bill clients for
use of CD-ROMs and on-line services that have flat-rate billing.
How do firms decide what rate to bill? How do they keep track of
time? Is CD-ROM viewed as a profit center or do firms want to
simply break even? Do any firms view CD-ROM as a library expense
similar to looseleafs? How is usage of on-line services with flat-
rates billed to the clients?
Each year, we present a Continuing Legal Education program on
CALR, and the attorneys are always interested in billing
strategies. The majority of the attorneys who usually attend are
solo or small firm practitioners with limited exposure to CALR
systems.
I have searched for articles and books, but have not found much.
I would appreciate any anecdotes, ideas, or suggestions. Thanks!
