Here at Boalt Hall Kathleen Vanden Heuvel and I continue to teach Advanced
Legal Research in a lecture format to 120-150 students a year. Its half
quite basic and half quite theoretical. We work in some information
theory and jurisprudence, but we also teach using the LSA. The heart of the
course is the problem sets. They are open ended and get the students working
with the reference staff in a creative way. It is quite a drain on the
staff, but it creates a vision of the librarians as partners in a research
enterprise. Of course its a lot of grading. The Pathfinders are the final
project. Lots of work but still, I think, worth it.
