Subject: Disruption in Regular Operations
To: "law-lib" <law-lib@ucdavis.edu>
Construction began last month on a project to add 12,500 square
feet to the Texas Tech University Law Library (underground) and
to remodel the existing physical plant, including virtually all
staff offices and work areas. Law Library staff members will
move to temporary offices and work areas beginning as early as
next week. We expect to be in these temporary locations until
mid-August.
The construction will prevent access to portions of the
collection for unpredictable periods, so our routine services
will be affected from time to time. We expect to be unable to
fill many ILL requests during this time but will resume our
regular services as soon as possible.
Also, we may be forced to make a few ILL requests of our own for
rather ordinary items. If we request such an item on
interlibrary loan, we would hope that you understand that the
reason lies with these extraordinary circumstances and not the
quality of the library collection here. Your help in providing
us with needed materials for our students and faculty members
during the construction project will be greatly appreciated, and
we thank everyone in advance for helping us live through this
exciting, exasperating time.
Staff telephone numbers will also be affected, so we may be
difficult to reach at times. The general library telephone
number, (806) 742-3794, will remain the same. Please call that
number if you have difficulty reaching a particular individual.
Thanks for your understanding and sympathy.

Please feel free to put your requests for materials up on OCLC to us
at VLA during your reconstrruction projet. We lived through
similar circumstances a few years back when all of the windows,
air conditioning and heating were replaced. Westlaw, Lexis and other
full-text on-line services did help, along with referal of many
students and other library users to area/regional law libraries.
Cramped "temp" lib. offices (set up in student study rooms)
(remember, no air cond....) were miracles of space use and inovative
morale-enhancement techniques. The worst was planning the future
needs of patrons (and staff) during construction (what to take, what
to take).... we set up a satellite library in a relatively unaffected
classroom for the summer. The rest of the collection was sealed
off, though, special "runs" were made by specific staff to retrieve
some things for some people....
Good luck with your project. Please let me know how things went. And
remenber to feel free to ask us on OCLC [ VLA ] for what you need.
