We had alot of trouble with losing staplers and staple pullers, and
having heavy duty staplers broken. It was also creating congestion at
the circulation desk. Therefore, we had two two-by-fours mounted on
tables, one in the PC Room, and one by the paper cutter which will
soon be placed near the main copy machines. Mounted on each of these
two by fours are the following:
A heavy duty stapler, which can no longer be placed on the floor
and stomped by those loveable but sometimes foolish students.
A hand held regular stapler, chained securely.
A staple puller, also chained to the board.
The hole punches have not been mounted, but seem to be staying by the
rest of the supplies. We have to add staples now and then, but this
arrangement has cut down on congestion and the circ desk, and
eliminated the wandering stapler problem. We get very few requests
for other supplies except for scissors. I am seriously considering
adding a pair of chained down scissors to the handy little two-by-
four office supply stations.
This arrangement seems a natural part of supplying a PC Room and
allowing students to do word processing in it. I guess I feel for
them, having been there before but without PC's. I am well aware
that the advent of pc's has only made it possible to be in a
greater hurry than before, as they allow us to turn out papers
more quickly, and given the natural tendency to try to pack as much
in between classes as possible.... Nonetheless, white out, pencils,
pens and paper would be going too far. While I have lent out pens,
it doesn't happen often. If asked for paper I would just have to say
"sorry".
