To: Members of the Academic Law Libraries SIS:
The 1995 Academic Law Libraries SIS Reception will be held at the
University of Pittsburgh's Barco Law Library on Tuesday, July 18th from
6:00pm until 8:00pm.
The entire staff of the Barco Law Library has been sprucing up the joint,
getting ready to welcome our friends and colleagues to our little corner
of the 'Burgh. We will be offering tours, light food and drink, and an
opportunity to review our recently installed Law School Local Area
Network. We are all eagerly looking forward to your visit.
The Barco Law Library is very easy to get to from the Convention Center
and hotels. The easiest route is to take the PAT bus. Any one of the
61's (61A, B, or C) or 71's (71 A, B, C, D) will take you to Oakland
(our neighborhood) in about 15 minutes. The buses can be picked up along 5th
Avenue, a 3 to 6 block walk from the convention center and hotels. Drop off
for the 61's is at Forbes Ave and Bouquet St, directly adjacent to the Law
School. Drop off for the 71's is at 5th Avenue and Oakland St, 1 block from
the law school. (Go down the hill 1 block to get to Forbes Ave.) Look for
the three round towers (Pitt dorms) as a landmark, they are across the
street from the Law School. Bus fare is $1.25 each way - a dollar bill
and a quarter are accepted. A cab ride is also easy and convenient, it will
cost $7.00 to $9.00 for up to 4 people. If you are driving, you'll find
parking in Schenley Plaza, 3 blocks west of the law building between
Forbes Ave and Schenley Drive.
The Reception will be in the Law Library, on the Fourth Floor of the Law
School building. Library staff members will be on the first floor to
send you in the right direction. Please wear your AALL Badge as your
"ticket".
If you want to come early, Oakland is the home of the Carnegie Museums
and Library. The Carnegie was Andrew Carnegie's personal gift to the
city of Pittsbugh and features a dinosaur-laden Museum of Natural History
and a nationally renown Art Museum, as well as the showcase Carnegie Public
Library. The University of Pittsburgh features the Cathedral of
Learning, the tallest academic building in the U.S. Within the Cathedral
are the Nationality Classrooms. These 23 working classrooms were
developed in tribute to Pittsburgh's ethnic heritage and are classically
decorated to reflect the cultures of the various communities that settled this
area. Adjacent to the Cathedral of Learning is the Heinz Memorial Chapel,
donated by the H.J. Heinz family (think Heinz ketchup). The Chapel
features some of the finest examples of blue stained-glass you'll see.
After the reception, Oakland and the neighboring Shadyside and Squirrel Hill
neighborhoods feature some of the city's best and most diverse restaurants,
with Indian, Tibetan, Middle Eastern, Russian, Mexican, French, and Kosher
Chinese cuisine's available. Information about these restaurants will be
available at the AALL Hospitality Desk and at the reception.
The weather is likely to be warm and humid, with afternoon thundershowers
always a possibility. Dress casually and comfortably, carrying an
umbrella might be advisable.
If you have any questions, drop me an e-note or check at the Hospitality
Desk. Again, we are all looking forward to your visiting with us.
