AALL chapters : Eligibility for more than two memberships

If you have no interest in the chapters of the American Association of
Law Libraries, go ahead and delete or "zap" this record now.

Does anyone know of another locale besides the state of Virginia where it
is possible to become a regular (rather than associate) member of three or
more chapters of the AALL? Law librarians in Virginia may be members of the
Virginia Assn of Law Libraries, the Law Librarians Society of Washington,
D.C., and/or the Southeastern Chapter of the AALL (SEAALL).

SEAALL is currently considering an amendment to its bylaws which would
expand its geographic coverage to allow D.C. law librarians to become full
or regular, rather than associate, members. If this amendment passes, we may
be adding Maryland as an additional locale where one might be a full member
of 3 different chapters. Perhaps I am wrong about this, but it appears
that currently a law librarian who lives in Maryland but works in D.C. may
become a full member of the Law Library Assn of Maryland and of the D.C.
chapter; the proposal would add a third chapter possibility --> SEAALL.

   Does this matter?
   Well, one might say ...
Hey! if someone wants to pay three sets of chapter dues, let them join
all they can, for full membership privileges in each chapter.

On the other hand, are we spreading ourselves too thin, in terms of our
ability to find folks who are willing to run for office, work on committees,
etc.? Or, consider the opposite side of this coin... suppose there is an
energetic person, highly dedicated to professional service who volunteers to
serve on committees or run for office in all three chapters, if not
simultaneously, at least in consecutive years? Is it fair that this person
has a greater opportunity for involvement than the law librarian who can
only qualify for *full* (active, regular, whatever-it's-called) membership
in just a single chapter?

I may be nit-picking. But this has bothered me a little, and I'd like to
see what other people's thoughts are. --Alva
