How about not junking up the list with ads, anyway, and excluding
announcement s of new products, too. Announcements limited to meetings,
availability of books for giveaway, etc.
The policy regarding advertisements could be that anyone could message
the list saying they have an advertisement to offer about a new product, a
new service that etc etc. Anyone wanting the details should reply to
this message. That way the advertisements can be offered, and accepted by
readers only by responding affirmatively. I wish the folks that want to
advertise would just start up their own listservers, like one for legal
services.
