ACTION ALERT -- URGENT!! (fwd)

From: Franklin Weston (faw@pwa.acusd.edu)
Date: 06/14/95

Call to sign a petition against US Censorship of the Internet.

TO SIGN THE PETITION:

       http://www.cdt.org/petition.html

DEMAND THE SAME PROTECTION FOR DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS AS CURRENTLY EXIST FOR
PAPER AND BROADCAST PUBLISHERS.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AMERICAN TO SIGN.

An outcry from overseas could be very effective in this struggle to defend
the internet from intrusive government regulation.

                                 *****

The US Senate is currently considering passage of the so-called
"Communications Decency Act", including the controversial "Exon/Gorton" bill
which would effectively censor the internet and any other "communications"
by anyone, anywhere in the world.

This bill is under discussion *right now* and everyone concerned with
keeping the internet free and accessible should respond **immediately** to a
call to sign a petition against this insidious piece of legislation and in
favour of the alternative by Senator Leahy which guarantees freedom of
speech and privacy of communications.

What is the Communications Decency Act (CDA)?

The CDA is a misguided attempt at removing obscene material from electronic
networks authored by Sen. Exon (D-NE) and Sen. Gorton (R-WA). For electronic
media, it would criminalize speech which is currently legal under print and
broadcast. It defines new classes of illegal speech, including speech which
is 'filthy'. "

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE AMERICAN TO SIGN.
