FREE REPORTER'S FIRST AMENDMENT HANDBOOK NOW AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET
The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is now offering our First
Amendment Handbook to the 'net. The handbook provides guidance for
journalists on legal troubles that may occur in the newsgathering process.
Chapter titles: Surreptitious Recording, Access to Courts, Gag Orders,
Access to Places, Freedom of Information Acts, Confidential Sources &
Information, Libel, Invasion of Privacy, Prior Restraints, Copyright
Please note that the handbook is a few years old, and will be updated this
summer. Copies, both print and electronic, will be available in September.
The handbook is available in two formats:
1. Text. Receive the text as a mail file directly from our mailbot. Send
mail to rcfp@cais.com with "request handbook" (without quotes) in the
Subject field. The handbook text is immediately sent back as mail. Beware:
it's about 130K. Or you can pick up the file as 1stamend.txt at the FTP
site described below.
2. Windows Help File. Anyone running MS Windows can use this file like any
program's help file. This is available by FTP or World-Wide Web from the
following URL:
ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gl/gleslie/handbook
The help file is named 1stamend.hlp. There is also an icon file
(1stamend.ico) and a readme file explaining how to set up the file as an
icon in Program Manager. (Netcom's FTP site seems to be slow some times,
so be patient.)
The help file is also available on disk by sending $5 to The Reporters
Committee for Freedom of the Press, 1101 Wilson Blvd., Suite 1910,
Arlington, VA 22209. A printed version of the book is available (and has
been for years) for the same price.
If you have any problems, write to rcfp@cais.com.
