At least some Depository Libraries have received a pricey ($395) CD-ROM
containing searchable text of Nuremberg War Crimes Trials material, without
having asked for it, from Aristarchus Knowledge Industries in Seattle. We
got this unsolicited merchandise today. This is no way to do business
to begin with, but it's worse for their lack of having included a postpaid
envelope in which to return the disc. This is supposed to be "on approval,"
but we've had no chance to decide about that!
They expect either a commitment to buy or a returned disc by July 1,
although they offer to allow Depositories to delay payment until
the new fiscal year begins. (Isn't that July 1 for most of you?)
While they can't force payment for unsolicited merchandise, you can
be bothered with dunning letters or sales calls. Caveat emptor!
Please react to this outrageous and aggressive marketing ploy. Their
toll-free number is (800) 435-8221. There was no one answering this
morning, PDT, but there is voice mail for those who wait long enough.
