Thanks very much to all of you who responded to my request re the problems
of going smoke free in the law school. I'll summarize the responses very
briefly: There are, not surprisingly, many schools, firms, etc. that
have gone smoke free. They are found all over the country, even in the
heart of tobacco land. The experience of most was that after some initial
complaining / whining/ grousing (you get the idea) the decision to go
smoke free became pretty much a non-issue after a year. In some instances,
a few faculty continue to smoke in their offices and the maintenance folks
occasionally light up. Otherwise, full compliance. The biggest single
problem is that while smokers generally do go outside to smoke, they tend
to congregate by the entrance to the building. This doesn't look
especially attractive to some and walking through the haze to get into
the building creates can be unpleasant.
Thanks again to all.
