Punitive damage research

Several states have enacted legislation which caps the amount of punitive
or "noneconomic" damages which can be awarded in medical malpractice
litigation. We are looking for statistics or studies which demonstrate
the positive or negative effects of these statutes (ie. fewer cases
filed, damages awarded dropped by a certain percentage, etc...). Any
ideas on who I should contact or a database that might reference these
types of statistics? While we would like to focus on medical
malpractice, any data on general damage caps would be useful. Thanks for
your help.
