Mitch,
Loyola Chicago usedthe Green Slip program at one point, but we too found
that it was too limited. We also use the LC CIP Alert Service. LC MARC
tape extracts with just J and K classifications. There is a cost for
this service, but you get the subject headings and series information
which do help more than just publisher information on the Green slips.
Price information is not usually included in CIP since it is pre-pub
info. There is a charge for this service, but you can have a deposit
account with LC Cataloging Distribution Service.
All book vendors supplied slip information comes from these MARC tapes,
but many are free. We get slips from Blackwell North America and
Blackwells Oxford for British and Canadian publications. Otto Harras-
sowitz provides foreign publication info. There are general book vendor
s whowill provide this service: Ballen books, Academic Book Center.
Pricing info is provided on Vendor produced slips. You will see some
overlap and see titles several times the more slips you receive, but
better more than once than not at all.
How helpful slip programs are is a matter of experimentation. We found
that all vendor services trail the LC CIP cards, but when the price is
included it helps you decide about those trade published law related
monographs. Good Luck and feel free to contact me if you'd like samples
and/or addresses and contact people.
