We have a number of Gateway 2000 computers at our law school, which
unfortunately include Gateway's Telepath modems. Avoid these modems, as
they do not work well in general, and with Westmate for Windows, in
particular.
By the way, PC Magazine published a comparative review of high-speed
modems in vol. 12, no. 12, which we just received. You might also check
with customer service at both companies to see if they have any
recommendations. You should certainly not have to pay more than $200 for
a good quality internal 14.4k modem. Even Hayes now has a reasonably
priced line of PC modems which are only priced at 10-15% above the
competition.
