GSLIS UCLA Proposed Closing

From: Paul Biron (pbiron@argo.gslis.ucla.edu)
Date: 06/04/93

As many of you in the Library and Information Science Profession
may have already heard, on June 3, 1993 UCLA Chancellor Young
announced a proposal to retructure five of UCLA's professional schools.
The proposal calls for the "disestablishment" of the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science, meaning that UCLA would no longer offer
an MLS or Ph.D. in Library and Information Science.

NO LIBRARY SCHOOLS, NO LIBRARIANS, NO LIBRARIES?

The UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science
and its constituents are mounting an aggressive campaign opposing
Chancellor Young's proposal to close the School in July 1994.

The library school and the library profession are stunned that
at a time when information is needed by California's diverse
communities and businesses the Chancellor has recommended closing
one of the two active professional degree programs in California.

Quality of programs does not seem to be the issue as the UCLA
library school ranks consistently among the top five in North
America. The University's lack of support for female dominated
professions is clearly apparent. In addition to gender
discrimination UCLA administration's market-driven attitude
penalizes service-oriented schools whose alumni are financially
unable to provide large cash contributions.

In the information age the Graduate School of Library and
Information Science is vital to informing people who will create
California's future.
