_LegalTrac:_ The Last Word (for now)

For the information of anyone who missed it, I'm reproducing below my
item that appeared in the Wednesday, July 13 issue of _Seattle Soundings_:

"The Advisory Committee on Indexing of Periodical Literature is pleased
to announce that Information Access Company [IAC] will be making NO
changes to _LegalTrac,_ the CD-ROM-based periodical index sponsored by AALL.

"In communications to the Committee earlier this spring, IAC had
indicated that the compact disc that holds _LegalTrac_ was nearly out of
space, so that the publisher would have to either shrink the database or
split it onto multiple discs. In response to these communications, the
Committee posted a notice on the LAW-LIB electronic bulletin board
soliciting AALL member preferences as to how best to change the LegalTrac
product. The Committee was pleased to receive numerous helpful responses
to this posting.

"The end of the story is that no changes will in fact be necessary.
Apparently, the _LegalTrac_ disc had always carried a considerable amount
of hidden data that was unnecessary to the substance or the functioning
of the LegalTrac index. IAC will now eliminate this data from the disc,
with the result that no reduction to the content or the scope of
_LegalTrac_ coverage will be necessary for a number of years.

"The Committee continues its work of recommending new titles for
inclusion _LegalTrac,_ and in its sister publications, _Current Law
Index_ and _Legal Resource Index_. We also serve the dual purposes of
suggesting improvements to these products, and communicating the
sentiments of the AALL membership to Information Access Company. We
welcome your comments, which may be addressed to us through Headquarters."
