We moved a library of about 20K volumes a few years ago. One thing that
was very helpful was color coded maps of the OLD library and the NEW
library. Be aware that movers aren't necessarily good readers and color
coding helped get around this. Also, be there all the time! The movers
were trying to be helpful and started reshelving the books...backwards
and reverse order (we are classified by LC). Label all boxes. Be a mother
hen. We still lost some stuff, including some parts of shelving, but
overall it went OK. Make arrangements with local firms for attorneys to
use their libraries, because your attorneys will want to start working
the next day after the move. Which reminds me, the attorney offices will
be set up before the library so don't freak out. A lot of "extra"
furniture was stacked up in the library and since we didn't have the
movers to help with moving it (they were setting up the offices first),
we used it as an opportunity to "scrounge" up small shelves and chairs
for OUR use in the library!
As soon as you can, take yourself and your staff out to lunch to
celebrate surviving!
