be sent until the Net versions were ready. I'm happy to say that the
relevant documents are now available via WWW and Gopher from the LII
as described below. --Tb.]

Draft ABA standards discussion at AALL

A draft revision of all American Bar Association accredition
standards relating to law school libraries has been mailed to
all law school library directors and to all law school deans.
An open comment period on this proposed revision will be held
during AALL, Wednesday, July 13, 8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. in Room
307-308 of the Seattle Convention Center. The mailing includes
four documents: a cover memo from James P.White, Consultant on
Legal Education, summarizing the procedure for adopting revised
standards and the major changes being proposed, the current
draft revision, the existing library standards, and an outline
of the draft with references to the present standards.

If your mail is slow, or you are not on the mailing list, the
text of the all four documents can be retrieved on www as
follows:
http:\\www.law.cornell.edu\aba.toc.html

and from gopher.law.cornell.edu in the section "Other references
useful in legal education and research."

As a member of the Standards Review Committee, which reviews
all proposed amendments to the Standards, and as chair of the
Subcommittee charged with drafting a complete revision of the
library standards, I would like to make the following personal
comments:

This draft is not the final version by any means. Its
substance has not been approved by the Council of the Section
of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. Rather, the
Council wants reactions to this proposal before acting on any
revision.

Written comments are important. All of them submitted to the
Consultant's Office by the deadline of October 15, 1994 will be
reviewed by the Standards Review Committee after that date,
not in 1995 as a typo in the Consultant's memo says.

Comments should be mailed to Dean James P. White, Consultant on
Legal Education, American Bar Association, 550 West North St.,
Indianapolis, Ind. 46302. Before proposing revisions, please
look at the rest of the Standards, such as Standards 402 and
405 relating to faculty and 211 and 213 on non-discrimination.

The complete Standards are included in "American Bar
Association Standards for Approval of Law Schools and
Intepretations...." The latest edition is dated October 1993.

Remember that these Standards are not aspirational, but
minimums that each law school, whatever its mission, must meet
to become accredited and to remain accredited by the American
Bar Association.

As I am about to start my westward trek, without e-mail access,
do not expect any response from me, before Seattle, to any
messages posted on this bulletin board.
