Lyo, David, etc.:

I'm in favor of as many substantive discussions as we can reasonably
create. I favor the "core group" approach which Lyo articulated for
one very simple reason: most faculty informed about LISTSERV
technology and shown examples of archived traffic (even from a
relatively high-level substantive discussion like CYBERLAW) say, "I
have too much to read already".

The trick is to create a list which is sufficiently fashionable as an
intellectual milieu that they'll feel left out academically if they
don't participate -- which argues for high-level colloquia appearing
to be sponsored by people regarded as peers or better in the existing
academic culture. So much for democracy.

Incidentally, I think (without evidence) that students may be even
harder sells than faculty, but for all the same reasons.

Regards,
Tb.
