1994 AALL Program Proposal

From: Vianne Tang (TANG@law.missouri.edu)

Hi folks, welcome back from Boston! It's time to talk about our
planning for the 1994 AALL programs in Seattle after enjoying our
great convention this year.

I think it will save me some time to post one message here than
to send e-mail to all the chairs of the AALL Education Committee
and the SISs, telling them my proposal to the Education Committee
of OBS/SIS for the 1994 annual meeting and finding out whether
anybody had similar ideas. If any SIS or Committee plans to
propose any programs with similar ideas as mine stated below, or
if you have any comments on my proposal, please response to me AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE. The deadline for sending proposals in is Aug.
11, 1993. I will be glad to listen to any suggestions and
comments since the programs are designed for the AALL members and
they shall meet the needs and interests of our members.

The title of my proposal is: Utilize Internet and LANs to access
bibliographic utilities. The target audiences are whoever set up
the systems for the library staff and patrons to access the three
major bibliographic utilities, OCLC, RLIN, and WLN, as well as
those who actually use the bibliographic utilities to get their
job done.

This program intends to cover the data transfer options, costs,
workflow, and the Z39.50 standard of accessing the services of
bibliographic utilities via Internet (including telnet, Gopher,
FTP, and e-mail) and the LANs. Vendors and member libraries will
give different perspectives on the comparison of the traditional
access method to the new approaches.

Thanks in advance for any responses!
