At the Legal History/Rare Books SIS business meeting in
Boston several people expressed an interest in subscribing to Ex-
Libris, the general rare books bulletin board. ExLibris has about
850 members, almost none of whom are working in law libraries.
However, many of the discussions touch on topics of interest to
law librarians responsible for rare books or other special
collections. Issues like security, preservation, imaging, etc.
come up frequently.
I promised people at the meeting that I would send out the
instructions for subscribing. So, here they are. Please note that
my instructions are about a year old. The address for subscribing
is the same, but there have been some other changes. Once you're
on, you should get the usual welcome message which will be more
up to date than the one I'm forwarding below.

To: ExLibris subscribers and potential subscribers:

Following is a reminder of ExLibris LISTSERV characteristics
which will be sent
to all of you from time to time. It duplicates the signon
message that one
gets upon initially subscribing. If you wish to subscribe and
are trying to |
do so, please follow the instructions given three paragraphs
below. |
The address of the group (for messages, *not* for subscribing
or other
housekeeping -- see below) is either of:
EXLIBRIS@RUTVM1.BITNET
EXLIBRIS@RUTVM1.RUTGERS.EDU (capitalization is
unimportant)
The address of the listserv, for housekeeping matters including
subscribing |
and unsubscribing, is either of:
|
LISTSERV@RUTVM1.BITNET
LISTSERV@RUTVM1.RUTGERS.EDU (capitalization is
unimportant) |
NOTE ABOUT ADDRESSES ABOVE: options are shown with full
domain names.|
Your local system may require different entry forms; it is YOUR
responsibility|
to determine the proper local entry form, which may or may not
need the full |
domain as shown above and may or may not need special leading
characters that |
are not here shown.
For the rest of this document, a short form of the names
is shown to |
avoid clumsiness; please infer that you must have a complete
domain name even |
where the incomplete one is shown below.
|
You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF
EXLIBRIS" command to
LISTSERV@RUTVM1. Please note that this command must NOT be
sent to the list
address (EXLIBRIS@RUTVM1) but to the LISTSERV address
(LISTSERV@RUTVM1). You
may also wish to use the "SET EXLIBRIS NOMAIL" command
(again, sent to
LISTSERV@RUTVM1 and not to EXLIBRIS@RUTVM1) to temporarily
suspend your
participation (e.g. for vacations or other absences) and
the "SET
EXLIBRIS MAIL" to resume.
Those interested in subscribing should send the following
message to
LISTSERV@RUTVM1:
SUBSCRIBE EXLIBRIS your_full_name
(Capitalization is unimportant. Be sure the message is
contained in a single
line. If you are willing, it is helpful to include institutional
identi- |
fication on the same line, as:
|
SUBSCRIBE EXLIBRIS your_full_name, institution_name
|
note the use of the comma)
|
EXLIBRIS is an unmoderated news and discussion group for
the purpose of
discussing matters related to rare book and manuscript
librarianship, including
special collections and related issues. Membership is open to
anyone who wishes
to subscribe. The contents are archived as is usual for
LISTSERV groups (see
below). The full membership list will be circulated from time
to time unless
objections are heard.
Please be aware that your local system REPLY mechanism may or
may not direct
your message to EXLIBRIS. It may only go to the email address
attached to the
message you are replying to. In such a case (you'll be able to
see) you should
MAIL to EXLIBRIS rather than REPLYing to the message. It is
considered a
courtesy to include your name and institution at the top of
your message for
identification (our email addresses are often a bit terse).
This notice will be circulated regularly for the reminder of
old members and
the edification of new. Feel free to forward this message to
those who might be
interested in joining the discussions. Please direct
questions (but not
subscriptions) to the undersigned at graham@zodiac.rutgers.edu.
Thank you and
enjoy yourselves.
This discussion group has been set up and is maintained
through the good
offices of staff members of Rutgers University Computing Services
at Rutgers --
The State University of New Jersey. Rutgers reserves the right
to discontinue
or modify this service for any reason.
The amount of acknowledgement you wish to receive from
this list upon
completion of a mailing operation can be changed by means of a
"SET EXLIBRIS
option" command, where "option" may be either "ACK" (mail
acknowledgement),
"MSGACK" (interactive messages only) or "NOACK".
Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived.
You can obtain a
list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX
EXLIBRIS" command to
LISTSERV@RUTVM1. These files can then be retrieved by means of a
"GET EXLIBRIS
filetype" command, or using the database search facilities of
LISTSERV. Send an
"INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.
Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to
determine that you
are signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW"
command, which
returns the network address and name of all the subscribers. If
you do not wish
your name to be available to others in this fashion, just issue a
"SET EXLIBRIS
CONCEAL" command.
More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in
the "General
Introduction guide", which you can retrieve by sending an
"INFO GENINTRO"
command to LISTSERV@RUTVM1.
