Re: Round 47 in the confirmation wars

As I understand it (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong), the
reason we are all suffering these subscribe/unsubscribe and receipt con-
firmation problems is that law-lib is not a Listserv list (i.e. it does
not run using some version of Listserv software) and therefore does not
behave in the same way as the other lists we have experience with. I am not
receiving these receipt confirmation messages from any other list I subscribe
to, so I strongly suspect that Listerv lists are "smart" enough to cope with
this sort of thing.

>From my own experience, I discovered the hard way that you can't suspend
law-lib mail with the usual "set nomail" command. The day before leaving for
a two-week vacation I sent off "nomail" commands to all the lists I subscribe
to. When I returned my mailbox was overflowing with law-lib messages,
and I had exceeded the disk quota on my account. Apparently with law-lib
you have to unsubscribe to stop your mail, and even that has been hard for
some people to master simply because law-lib does it differently.

A modest proposal....Could we prevail upon the good people at UC Davis to
run law-lib using Listserv software? If they are unable or unwilling to do
so, is there another institution willing to provide a Listserv home for
law-lib? I realize that as "owners" UC Davis would have to agree to this move,
but I think it would be in the best interests of all of us. If not, perhaps
another institution could start a similar list and we could all pick up our
marbles and go play over there.
