aba draft on computing for site visits

Dear colleagues: I've been asked to provide the ABA by late July with draft
law school computing language for them to consider including as instructions
to site evaluators. This language would call for a separate section of the
ABA site visit report on Law School computing (not law library computing).
Presently, there is no one on ABA site visits required to look at and report
on Law School computing. The draft language needs to be somewhat specific
and still open ended.

Below is my first draft. I would greatly appreciate your input on the draft
language. You may respond directly to me if you wish. Albert Brecht

Many thanks.

                     COMPUTING IN LAW SCHOOLS

                 Direction to ABA Site Evaluators

In addition to computing in the Library, which will be covered in
the report's section on the Library, a separate section on
computing in the Law School shall be prepared.

This Law School computing section should include, but not be
limited to, the following matters. 1. Do all faculty,
librarians and staff who need computers have them at their work
stations? 2. Is the Law School networked to provide e-mail to
all faculty, librarians and staff within the Law School, within
the university (if applicable), and throughout the world? 3. Is
the Law School connected to Internet so that the faculty,
librarians and staff who need it have access to it? 4. Do the
faculty, librarians and staff who need access to various
databases have access to them on the computer at their work
station -- data bases such as Lexis, Westlaw, Central Library or
Law Library online catalog, University scholarly databases, etc.?
5. What computing support -- hardware, software, and computer
support staffing -- is provided to faculty, librarians and staff
and is it adequate? computer support staff?
