Many e-mail systems allow the sender of a message the option of
requiring "receipt confirmation"--an automatic response with the
date that the message was read by the person receiving it. Not
all e-mail systems provide this function.
"Receipt confirmation" can be handy when sending a message to an
individual; it is a very bad idea to use this option when sending
to a discussion list. Every recipient (1) whose e-mail system
supports receipt acknowledgment, and (2) who has that option
turned on in their account will generate a receipt confirmation
message--cluttering up mailboxes for everyone on the list. (In
some cases, these responses can then generate further automatic
responses, creating a loop that results in hundreds of messages.)
The current receipt confirmation messages will continue as long
as people who only sign on every week or two do so. Eventually
they will all be read, so the only thing to do now is ignore
these messages.
A better thing to do is for everyone on the list to make sure
that their e-mail accounts are set to neither request nor
acknowledge receipt of messages. Your systems support people can
tell you how to do this.
