Cataloging argument

Marie Whited, Law Catalog Liaison Specialist, Library of Congress Law
Library, has asked me to post two statements regarding the classification
and book number questions which appeared on this list on July 1-2.

   1. Marie agrees that LC's arrangement in KF of the three sets of US
Codes doesn't work anymore. As soon as she returns from vacation following
the AALL Conference in Boston, Marie will look into this and will make a
proposal for establishing new classification numbers.

   2. Regarding the whole call numbers for California Reports 2d- (KFC45.A22
...) and California Appellate Reports 2d- (KFC48.A212 ...), the Library of
Congress does not specify further subdivision of the base class numbers.
Any desired further subdivision should follow local practice within each
individual library. (Some libraries choose to end the call number with the
"A22" or "A212" line, and shelve the volumes by the series/vol. numbers
already printed on the spine.)

(P.S. If I still have anyone's attention -- are there any "distance
walkers" out there who would like to join me on Friday afternoon July 9 for
one or two walking tours 'round Boston? I have a Reebok walking route map
for Boston which has three-mile, five-mile, and seven-mile itineraries, with
points of interest marked, and not just the "Freedom Trail." Saturday
morning is a possibility too, but probably for the shorter route. I'd love
to have some company! Contact me directly, at e-mail address below.) --Alva
