REFERENCE LIBRARIAN - Position Available
THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI LAW LIBRARY

SETTING: The University of Miami Law Library supports primarily the legal
research of 1100 day program and 200 evening program J.D. students, nearly
100 LL.M. students and over 50 full-time faculty at The University of
Miami School of Law. The Law Library also provides service to the
University community, the local legal community, and to the general
public. The Law Library staff consists of 40 full-time employees,
including 15 professional librarians and a large number of part-time
employees. The Law School complex stands near the center of the private
university's main campus in suburban Coral Gables, Florida. The Law
School is currently expanding and renovating its facilities and is
developing local and offsite network access to a wide range of research
services. The collection contains over 419,000 volume equivalents,
including materials representing the laws of Europe and the Americas.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Reference Librarian provides weekday research
assistance for law school and university faculty and students, the local
legal community, and the general public. The Reference Librarian
prepares and teaches classes on research methods, LEXIS, WESTLAW, and
other online services, and other topics. The Reference Librarian
participates in a faculty liaison program, assists in collection
development, prepares printed guides to legal research, and may serve on
law faculty and library committees. The Reference Department consists of
four professional librarians and works closely with the Document Delivery
department and the Foreign and International Law Librarian. The
Reference Librarian reports to the Head of Reference Services.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a master's degree in library
science and a J.D., though a minimum of three to five years of law
library reference experience may substitute for one degree requirement.
Proficiency in using LEXIS, WESTLAW, and other online databases is
necessary. A strong service orientation, excellent interpersonal and
communication skills, and effective teaching abilities are required.
Experience with microcomputer software and CD-Rom applications for law
libraries and familiarity with developing resources such as the Internet
are desired.

SALARY & BENEFITS: This is a faculty appointment with all the benefits
of regular faculty except tenure. The minimum starting salary is $28,000
annually, but may be adjusted commensurate with qualifications and
experience. A comprehensive benefits package includes life, health, and
dental insurance; retirement plans; 22 vacation days and 13 paid holidays
annually; tuition remission for employee, spouse and children.
Professional development funding is available for association dues and
for attending conferences and workshops.
