AALL Members:

As the new AALL representative for standards to the Association for
Information and Image Management and National Information Standards
Organization, I plan to list proposed technical standards for comment or
suggestions by anyone interested. Please respond to me personally and not
the list for further information, including a copy of the proposed
standards.

The following is a list of the title and a brief description of the
standards that are currently up for review. Please responed by Febuary 28,
1994.

1. Title: MS59 - 199X Standard Recomendation Practice For The Use of Error
Monitoring and Reporting Techniques For Verification of The
Information Stored In Optical Disk - Based Information Systems.

Description: This standard recommended practice defines high level media
error monitoring and reporting techniques for verification
of the information stored in optical digital data disks.

2. Title: MS50 - 199X Standard Recommended Practice -- Monitoring Image
Quality of Aperture Car Film Image Scanners.

Description: This standard recommended practice specifies procedures for
quality control of images produced when aperture cards are
                scanned.

3. Title: MS38 - 199X Microrecording of Engineering Graphics Computer -
          Output Microfilm.

Description: This document specifies the procedures, dimensions and
quality values governing the microrecording of engineering
                documentation with a 35 mm computer-output microfilmer
(com). This includes microimage characteristics which are
common to source document production techniques as well as
those which are COM created by:

                  a. microfilming the face of a cathode ray tube and
                  b. focused radiation impinging directly upon the microfilm
by use of an electron beam or laser.

It does not includ microrecording of cartographic and
architecural material or other engineering graphics which
also conform to requirements of ANSI Y14-Drawing Series.

1. Title: NISO Z39.53 - 199X Codes for the Representation of Languages
          for Information Interchange

Description: This standard provides a standardized code for libraries,
information services and publishers to use to indicate
language in the exchange of information. It is a list
reflecting the need to distinguish recorded information
                by language.

2. Title: NISO z39.4 - 199X Guidelines for Indexes and Related Information
          Retrieval Devices

Description: This standard provides guidlines for the content,
organization, and presentation of indexes used for the
retrieval of documents and parts of documents. It deals
with the principles of indexing, regardless of the type of
material indexed, the indexing method used (intellectual
analysis, machine algorithum, or both), the medium of the
index, or the method of presentation for searching. It
includes definitions of indexes and of their parts,
attributes and aspects; a uniform vocabulary; treatment of
the nature and variety of indexes; and recommendations
regarding the design, organization, and presentation of
indexes. It does not attempt to set standards for every
detail or technique of indexing. These can be determined
for each index on the basis of factors covered in the
standard, including the type of material indexed, the
medium of the index, the method of presentation for
searching, and the type of user for whom the index is
                designed.
