BAR CODING -Reply

1. We put the barcode on the inside of the back cover of the
book. I personally think that it's better to put it inside
because this will make it more durable.

2. We put barcodes on almost everthing except the Rare
materials, which should never leave the Rare Book room
theoretically, the microforms, the computer diskettes, and some
pamphlets that will be discarded soon. Looseleaf sets, bound
volumes, reporters and periodicals are barcoded (most of them are
not circulated). It not only serves circulation purposes, but
also makes statistical counts easier.

3. We did some summer projects to put the smart barcodes on the
items and resolved the related problems. All the librarians were
involved. After we finished our last group of smart barcodes,
the remaining problems are left for the Technical Services staff
to deal with.
I believe it's the best to separate different types of
barcoding problems, and have different levels of staff to deal
with them. Sometimes, public services and technical services
staff need to work together to resolve certain difficult
problems. Simple jobs such as putting the barcodes on, verifying
bibliographic data and call number (or any unique number),
marking missing books on shelflist cards, etc., can be done by
student assistants or library assistants. Clear and precise
instructions should be given to the assistants on how to deal
with problems when they encounter them. Advanced-level problems
such as mismatch barcode and bibliographic, or holding, record;
multi-barcodes for one item, and on barcode for multi-volumes,
etc., should be dealt with by librarians, or by experienced
assistants under the supervision of librarians. You certainly
don't want to create another problem while resolving the barcode
problem.

Hope this helps.
