California Legislative Information

From: Joan Loftus (howarlof@CLASS.ORG)

Good morning --

California legislative information was supposed to be available earlier
this month. I've been sending messages to the server since last week and
this morning I finally (!) got a response. The instructions are rather
cryptic but I would recommend that if anyone wants to try this out to ftp
into the site and pull up the readme files. I'm in the process of doing
that but it seems like there are lots of readme files and lots of layers.

I've attached the first message that I got back by placing "help" in the
body of the message and sending the message to ftpmail@leginfo.public.ca.gov
If anyone else runs across a good description (in one file) of how to use
the system, can you post the info to the list?

Now, back to ftping the info ...

                         FTPMAIL HELP

FTPmail is used to retrieve one or more files of California's
legislative information by way of Electronic Mail (E-mail).
FTPmail enables you to E-mail FTP commands to the public access
computer. The public access computer interprets the FTP commands
and E-mails the requested legislative information back to you.

FTP commands are typed in the body of your E-mail message. Each
E-mail message must begin with the FTP "connect" or "open"
command and end with the FTP "quit" command. One or more
additional FTP commands are typed within these commands.

The following is a list of the commands that are used with
FTPmail:

connect or open Establish a connection with the public access
computer. This FTPmail process only supports
                    access to leginfo.public.ca.gov

help Retrieve the FTPmail help file

cd |pathname| Change the pathname directory or
                    sub-directory

dir or ls Listing of available sub-directories and/or
                    files in the current pathname

get |filename| Request a file of information and E-mail
                    it (filename) back

quit End of request. FTPmail will process your
                    request.

Your requested file of information will be sent to you by way of
an E-mail message. You will also receive two additional E-mail
messages. The first message is a response acknowledging that
FTPmail has received your job or request. The second message
provides information about your request, such as file size, and
indicates successful or unsuccessful completion of your request.

If you request a large file, FTPmail will divide up the file and
send back the information in two or more E-mail messages. You
will receive only one response message and one job completed
message.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the use of
FTPmail to retrieve files of legislative information, send your
