The American Library Association is encouraging libraries of all types to
distribute an 8-question survey to patrons for a minimum of 12 hours during
National Library Week, April 17-23, 1994. The purpose of the survey is to
provide, for the first time ever, a national "snapshot" of library customer
satisfaction. The responses will be used to "document" the fact of the
millions of satisfied customers in libraries, to learn how libraries can
better serve them, and to let patrons know that libraries care what they
think.
A camera-ready survey, in a simple "check one" format, is available from the
ALA Public Information Office, along with guidelines for administering the
survey. Libraries are encouraged to customize the survey by adding their name
or lo go or asking additional questions. Estimated time to complete the survey
is 3 minutes.Libraries are to report their survey results by May 15 to ALA.
All r esponses will be confidential and used solely for the purpose of
compiling a national picture of library customer satisfaction that can then
become a tool for promoting library use and support.
