NEXIS has taken away my OMNI file. Maybe I can live without it.
It's a bit of a nuisance to have to run the same search in both
CURRNT and ARCHIV if I want to be comprehensive, but I survived
without MEGA/MEGA.
I have a harder time coping with a few aspects of this change:
1. Mead, the company that recently turned layoffs into
"right-sizing," is presenting this as a "customer-driven" change
implemented in response to law librarian requests to help law
students learn cost-effective searching. Have they been watching
old tapes of Gen. Westmoreland's Five O'Clock Follies?
2. In order to "prevent users from recreating the NEXIS Omni
file," Mead has also taken away my ability to combine NEXIS files.
I had been teaching my students to use NYT,WPOST for selective
news coverage. No more of that.
3. If I try to access OMNI, I get a message that "OMNI is not a
correct file name." Does this helpful response mean I'm a moron
or I just can't type? User-friendlier systems manage something
along the lines of "You do not have access to OMNI under your
subscription."
Gotta run. I hear another student has done a .mi;.fu in ALLREV.
