OhioLINK Project

We have received several requests to post the following information
about the OhioLINK project with Innovative Interfaces Inc.
-------------

We currently have six institutions completely up and running on their
own INNOPAC systems (the Phase 1 libraries). These are:

        Miami University
        University of Cincinnati
        Bowling Green State University
        Wright State University
        Central State University
        Case Western Reserve University

The central catalog now consists of a merged catalog of these six
catalogs. Users can search their own local catalogs first, and with
a single keystroke, have their search transferred to the central
catalog. Or they can access the central catalog directly.

We also have available for public use at the central site, two UMI
databases: ABI/Inform and Periodical Abstracts. We are in the
process of loading Newspaper Abstracts and hope to have that
available in February. We have received the tapes for Dissertation
Abstracts, and as soon as III finishes profiling, we will begin to
load that database.

We have 12 libraries scheduled for implementation in Phase 2. These
are:
        Medical College of Ohio
North Eastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine
        Shawnee State University
        University of Akron
        Youngstown State University
        Ohio University
        State Library of Ohio
        Kent State University
        Cleveland State University
        University of Dayton
        Ohio State University
        University of Toledo

Phase 2 began this past fall and will continue into 1994.

Current projects and plans include the development and implementation
of patron-initiated borrowing requests through the central catalog
linked with both physical and electronic delivery of materials. We
will also be experimenting with Z39.50 connections to FirstSearch,
Serials Table of Contents, BNA Monographic Table of Contents, and
fulltext and image delivery (UMI and IAC), plus development work for
the "scholar's workstation".

That's it in a nutshell. You can access our central catalog and
local catalogs by telneting to:

        cat.ohiolink.edu

        login: ohiolink

This gets you into a frontend device running gopher software (this is
a standalone system separate from the III systems). From here you
can choose the central catalog, one of the Phase 1 libraries'
catalog, or explore some sample Internet services. You SHOULD be
barred from accessing the reference databases (ABI/Inform and
Periodical Abstracts)---though we have discovered a hole in our
security, so some of you may squeeze by for now--but keep in mind
that we are reprogramming to eliminate the hole--so that access will
disappear.
