WHAT DEPARTMENT SUPERVISES BOOK PROCESSING

Cataloging Services catalogs both serials and mongraphs using the OCLC
Microenhancer CATME Plus and generates spine labels, which are applied
by Processing. Processing was formerly under Collection Services, which
also handled serials check-in, binding, looseleaf updates, and mail distri-
bution. Because the Director of Collection Services took on extra
reference hours, she felt something had to go from her area. As the
woman handling processing also is responsible for shelving, reshelving, and
stack maintenance as well as book repair, the Processing Unit was transferred
to Circulation Services. Binding remains with the serials check-in person
in Collection Services, because our home-grown system lets us know when
serials need binding and most of the binding is for serials anyway. Since
the end of catalog processing is the application of the labels and and green
security strips, Cataloging Services may take over those two duties later
on.
